Emmeline Tran, a New York-based Investment Banker, gets personal on what works for work. Keeping it casual in an environment that is anything but truly is an art form.
I LIVE in New York City and I am an analyst at The Raine Group - sports, media and entertainment merchant bank with both advisory and investing sides. I work on both advisory and growth equity deals normally; currently in a venture capital rotation until September.
DESPITE working in a sports banking job, I am not a huge fan of sports. Or anything related to exercise in general. I do however, as a California girl, like the media and entertainment side.
My Favorite FOOD is sushi. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My go to drink is Rose in the summer or Sauvignon Blanc year round.
I am EXTRA petite, so when I find a brand I like I stay very loyal to it. This also makes finding cute outfits for work even harder (Thank you Bellgray!). My favorite brands I wear to work are: Theory, Vince, Joie, and Stuart Weitzman heels. I will always wear heels because I am tiny; I envy all those girls that can get away with flats.
My STYLE is classic with an understated edge - will mostly wear structured clothing in neutral colors but will wear layers of jewelry (chunky necklaces, multiple rings, big stones, etc.) and I have a variety of subtle materials / colors (i.e. leather, funky prints, velvet, pleats)
I prefer being more FORMAL than casual because it gives me more confidence. I love wearing blazers. I also realized I tend to wear all black the majority of the time...
My most stressful work TRIP was flying straight from a meeting in Hyderabad, INDIA, back to NYC. I needed to wear a suit and look presentable at the meeting but also didn't want to spend the extremely long flight in this outfit. I wore a Theory pantsuit with cropped skinny pants and a structured Theory cotton t-shirt in navy blue and my chunky Stuart Weitzman heels that were very comfortable and easy to walk in, especially while dragging a suitcase.
PRO tip, I brought Lululemon joggers and Tory Burch flats to change into at the airport.
Typically, for CLIENT meetings I like to wear pant suits. Although going to venture capital meetings now means no blazers needed. Pantsuits are my favorite!
